Bryce Harper Will Eat You For Breakfast

What: Sports Illustrated drops its jaw while surveying the most talented baseball player of our time. He's 16 and Mormon.

Quote: "When asked about his goals as a ballplayer, he replies, 'Be in the Hall of Fame, definitely. Play in Yankee Stadium. Play in the pinstripes. Be considered the greatest baseball player who ever lived. I can't wait.'"

Reaction: I went to lunch with my friend Joe last week, who recommended that I do a post on this guy. At first I resisted, explaining that despite what people call my blog, it's not about "Mormons in the news"; it's about "commentary on the Mormons." But then I read this article and was taken aback by the awe in the reporter's writing voice (punctuated with quotes from baseball scouts who have been following him since he was 13). Sports kings going ga-ga over Mormon talent meets the criteria for posts on this blog.

  1. I think this is too much attention to give someone before they have accomplished a single thing. Wait til the kid starts performing in the majors before you crown him.

  3. The hype on Bryce Harper is just starting. He is finally playing pro ball, and it seems like he has all the skills that made Josh Hamilton so highly regarded out of high school.

  4. In his first few games as a major leaguer, he's already playing like a veteran. As long as he stays relatively healthy, I think the kid is going to be a Hall of Famer.
